Rachel and Bryan’s Family Story of Giving

At her grandfather’s funeral, young Jerlyn quietly sat down and began to sketch. What emerged was a tender portrait of him holding her as a baby, a simple drawing that spoke volumes.

For Rachel Yang and Bryan Chua, that portrait was more than art. It was a reminder that their children were already absorbing the values of gratitude, remembrance, and generosity. It showed them that love and legacy are passed on in ways both spoken and unspoken, from one generation to the next.

A Legacy Rooted in Values

It was this belief — that legacy is not just about wealth or inheritance, but about raising children with a giving heart — that inspired Rachel and Bryan to establish the SCATECH Philanthropy Fund.

The fund takes its name from the company Rachel’s father built. More than a symbol of his life’s work, it reflects the principles by which he lived. By naming the fund SCATECH, Rachel and Bryan ensure that his spirit of quiet generosity continues — linking grandfather, parents, and children in a shared journey of giving.

Causes Close to the Family’s Heart

The SCATECH Philanthropy Fund supports causes that speak deeply to the family’s passions and history:

  • Migrant Workers

Being in the construction business, Rachel witnessed her father’s compassion for the migrant workers around him. He would often ask after their families and show genuine care beyond the workplace. Supporting migrant worker groups is their way of carrying forward his legacy of dignity and respect.

  • Arts

Their daughter Jerlyn discovered a love for the arts at a young age. Encouraged through classes and gallery visits, she showed how creativity nurtures imagination, empathy, and character. Rachel and Bryan want other children to have similar opportunities.

“Not everyone is fortunate enough to pursue the arts or other passions,” Bryan reflects.
“For us, it’s important to create those opportunities. They can shape how children see the world.”

  • Education

The family believes that education is one of the most powerful ways to expand opportunity. To that end, they have established a scholarship at the Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) to support financially disadvantaged and deserving undergraduates.

Passing Down What Matters Most

For Rachel and Bryan, the fund is more than a tribute. It is a living legacy, carrying forward the values that have defined their family, and creating a bond that will keep their children connected as adults.

As parents, they feel there is no better way to teach their children than by leading with example and practising together the values they hold dear — kindness, compassion, and humility.

They hope that one day, Jerlyn and Jerome will guide the fund themselves, bringing their own voices and perspectives as its causes evolve with the needs of the community.
